P.M. (Speakers will be available from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM).
WHERE: California
State Capitol Building, South Steps, in Sacramento, CA
WHAT:
Concerned California citizens are asking Governor
Schwarzenegger, nicely, to take down his Smoking Tent.
Returning to the steps of the State Capitol Building will be
the same people who organized the very first "Cigar Tent"
protest on Valentine's Day 2004 when Governor Schwarzenegger
first erected his smoking tent. After more than a year,
more and more Californians are expressing their outrage at
the Governor's inappropriate use of public buildings for his
own personal pleasure. Contrary to years of public
sentiment in support of greater reduction in statewide
tobacco use, Governor Schwarzenegger has tried to turn back
the clock. Used to conduct official governmental business,
the Governor's smoking tent brings back the time of smoke
filled patios, if not "smoke filled rooms". This
"stogie-style" of negotiating is being conducted with
indifference for the health of co-workers as well as guests
to the State Capitol. Not only has the Governor's personal
style of doing business compromised the health of others, it
has also condoned an activity that costs California no less
than 15.8 billion dollars each year according to
California's own Department of Health Services findings.
Featured
speakers will call for the Governor to take down his tent
and provide responsible leadership so that Californians can
be healthy both fiscally and physically. Many photo
opportunities will exist that should help send a clear
message that it is "TIME TO CARE"
about
the
#1 cause of preventable death and grief in California
today.
SPEAKERS:
LAURIE COMSTOCK,
Founder of Tobacco Survivors United (www.TobaccoSurvivorsUnited.org)
who has lost many family members and friends to
tobacco-related diseases.
CYNTHIA HALLETT,
Executive Director, Americans for Nonsmokers Rights, will
speak on the dangers posed by smoke filled rooms and patios
to smokers and nonsmokers alike.
DEBI AUSTIN,
Laryngectomee survivor that was so addicted to tobacco that
she used to smoke through the hole in her throat left from
her surgery to remove throat cancer caused by her smoking.
"Debi" did the unforgettable California Department of
Health Services ads (PSA's) on television that were seen
across the United States and in other countries. Debi
Austin was recently seen on the nationally broadcasted
reality show "COLD TURKEY."
JIM WALKER,
Executive Director, Stop Tobacco Abuse of Minors Pronto
(STAMP), (www.stamp.org)
will speak and be bringing his "Tobacco Truth Train"
exhibition and "Memorial to Loved Ones Lost To Tobacco Use".

The Montel Williams
Show on Tuesday, November 4, 2003 |

New York October 28, 2003 If you knew you were
going to die, and had one last wish what would it be? On November
4, 2003, THE MONTEL
WILLIAMS SHOW will feature one of the last interviews with
Barb Tarbox, a courageous young woman diagnosed with terminal
cancer, who reached out and helped others by sharing her hard earned
life lessons.
Barb Tarbox was diagnosed with lung cancer in September 2002, at
forty-one years -old. She had been smoking steadily since the seventh
grade, and in a short time, the cancer spread to almost every part of
her body.
While most people would be gripped by fear, Barb
decided to use what time she had left to share her story with young
people, in the hopes of persuading them to quit or, better yet not
start smoking in the first place.
That is what Tarbox did. And the results were
extraordinary.
After speaking at one junior high school, Tarbox
received 750 letters. Many teenagers handed over their packs of
cigarettes. Parents even quit in order to spare their children the
same fate of Barb’s young daughter, McKenzie. Tarbox vowed to spend
her last days helping others, and she did. Because of her
authenticity and her courage, over 50,000 young people across the
country responded to her message.
Barb died on May 18, 2003, leaving behind her husband, Pat, and many
loving friends and family.
Pat Tarbox, 45, (Edmonton, CA) will appear on the show, along with his
and Barb’s daughter, McKenzie, 10. Also appearing on the show is
Zoeanne Campbell 34, who quit smoking after hearing Barb speak. She
says that she does not want to put her kids through what McKenzie is
going through.
The Barb Tarbox story is the first in an ongoing series of Life
Journals on THE MONTEL
WILLIAMS SHOW. Life Journals chronicles the stories of
individuals who have made a difference in their lives and/or
communities.
